What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome?
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a disorder that affects the large intestine causing symptoms such as abdominal pain, gas, bloating, cramping, diarrhea and constipation. Unlike those affected with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, individuals suffering from IBS do not have an increased risk of colorectal cancer. Medical experts are still unsure as to what exactly causes IBS — though a commonly held belief is that IBS symptoms are the result of overly-strong contractions in the large intestine, and/or abnormalities in the gastrointestinal nervous system.
IBS is a chronic condition that must be managed long-term. The good news, however, is that the majority of IBS cases can be controlled through a well-managed diet and lifestyle. For more severe cases medication and counseling are recommended.
Causes of IBS
Experts do not have definitive answers to what causes irritable bowel syndrome but they believe that microbial factors may play a key role. IBS can occur after a bacterial infection or a parasitic infection (giardiasis) of the intestines. There may also be other triggers such as stress.
Other factors that may play a role include:
- diet
- environmental factors such as stress
- genetic factors
- an unusual response to an infection
- digestive organs with a high sensitivity to pain
- hormones
- an inability of the central nervous system (CNS) to control the digestive system
- a person’s mental and emotional state can contribute to IBS development such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- a malfunction of the muscles that move food throughout the body
Dietary Steps to Help Manage Irritable Bowel Syndrome
While there is no specific diet for IBS, there are some steps you can take to minimize your IBS from flaring up.
Manage Your Fiber Intake
Some people with IBS find it helpful to increase their fiber intake while others find it better to reduce their fiber intake. A balanced level of fiber in the diet can help promote healthy digestion.
Probiotic Supplements
Taking probiotics can also help some manage their IBS symptoms. These are beneficial bacteria for the gut and over time these help create a healthier gut.
Food Diary
Keeping a record of specific foods in your diet and their effects will help you identify your primary trigger foods.
Treatment for IBS
There is no known cure that completely eliminates irritable bowel syndrome.
