IBS & Candida
What Does Irritable Bowel Syndrome Have to Do With Candida?
The classic association of Candida albicans overgrowth in the body is inflammation called vaginitis. Dr. Oz had a recent program showing how a woman’s diet or the medications she takes (for example, antibiotics) can cause the imbalance and overgrowth of Candida. Dr. Oz omitted what I believe is an even more common symptom of Candida and that is Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
What Is Ibs?
Irritable Bowel Syndrome, or IBS, is a constellation of the stomach, intestinal problems: excessive gas, constipation alternating with diarrhea and stomach pain. The frustrating part with Irritable Bowel Syndrome is that doctors don’t have a specific test that can identify the cause. It is common for patients with this condition to have upper endoscopies and colonoscopies, but typically there is no pathology that is found. Patients are typically given medications that try to relieve gas and cramping.
In new research recently published in gastroenterology 2013, Dr. Halmos of Australia showed that a diet low in fermentable carbohydrates reduced symptoms of IBS.
Dr. Halmos, thank you for confirming what we at Mitchell Medical Group have seen in our practice for 20 years.
The Candida Diet
IBS is one of the most common symptoms of patients with Candida albicans overgrowth. For many years, physicians that prescribed a low-yeast, low sugar, low simple carbohydrate diet for their patients with the Candida syndrome were mocked. The medical community has been very slow to recognize how our diets can ameliorate the irritable bowel and other symptoms with Candida such as headaches, fatigue, irritability, inability to concentrate. I see day after day in our practice, patients who have suffered for years with these complaints and were never even suggested to try the diet. A simple Candida skin test in the office can demonstrate if there is an immediate hypersensitivity to this yeast.
The Candida free diet is a potent weapon to make sure the yeast doesn’t overgrow in your gut and the rest of your body. We give patients a list of foods to avoid and foods they can eat.
The Foods to Limit:
- Grains such as bread, pasta
- Highly processed foods and foods that include sugar
- Dairy — milk and cheese are also restricted because they contain forms of sugar in them.
So What Can You Eat?
There are lots of healthy foods to fill you up:
- eggs
- most types of vegetables,
- lean meats
- nuts
- Healthy snacks: berries, green apples, and coconut are acceptable treats.
The diet is not the only secret to our success with patients. Initially, we need to use antifungals to clear the body of the Candida overgrowth. We also recommend supplements like Probiotics and Yeast fighters with caprylic acid. The unique treatment which helps fortify patients for long term protection are the sublingual Candida drops which naturally enhance the body’s immune system to fight off the yeast.
Don’t let Irritable Bowel Syndrome irritate you anymore–check to see if Candida is the cause. MMG can help you. We want you to feel better…to live better.
